Single-Site Surgery
One of the most recent advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques is single-site surgery. Single-site surgery, Single incision surgery (SILS), and LESS all refer to the performance of laparoscopic procedures through one single small incision hidden in the umbilicus (belly-button). Using articulating laparoscopes and accessory surgical instruments procedures including oophorectomy and hysterectomy can be performed through a single 2 centimeter incision in selected cases. The advantage of this approach over traditional laparoscopic/robotic procedures is the absence of any visible scar after healing is completed.
Today, evan robotic surgery can be performed using the single-site technique.
